Develop the fundamentals of screen direction. Identify how to develop a concept and collaborate with a creative team. Explore how to tell a story visually, how to construct scenes and develop your camera skills with your fellow students.

Course components

  • Explore cinematic story telling including how sound, image and time converge to create powerful stories.
  • Develop your understanding of pre-production, production and post-production processes.
  • Build your skills in constructing scenes and directing actors for the screen.


  • An ability to cast, rehearse and direct film scenes.
  • Awareness of visual story telling components such as shot size and staging.
  • Understanding of cinematic conventions such as concept and premise, diagetic vs non diagetic elements and cinematic styles.

  • Please wear closed-in shoes. Shoes may be removed in the rehearsal room on the direction of the class tutor.
  • Please bring along a pen, notebook or electronic device and a bottle of water to all classes.
