Case Study - CareerTrackers

CareerTrackers is a national non-profit organisation which creates private sector internship opportunities for Indigenous university students. NIDA Corporate Training delivered a workshop as part of CareerTrackers' leadership conference for their student interns, which examined physical techniques to communicate with impact and authority. Since then, NIDA Corporate Training has been supporting CareerTrackers employees and interns to become more confident and engaging in their roles through communication and presentation skills training.

CareerTrackers recruits pre-professional Indigenous university students and links them with private sector employers to participate in a multi-year internship. Working with organisations such as Commonwealth Bank, BP, Herbert Smith Freehills, Foxtel, ANZ, NAB, Qantas, Westpac, Shell and Telstra to name a few, CareerTrackers provides a wide spectrum of support to help prepare students for leadership in the workplace and the community.

Peta-Lee Moran, a Student Advisor and Alumni from CareerTrackers was looking to improve her communication skills, particularly for presentations to small groups of colleagues and students or to larger forums. She attended Presenting with Confidence, which explores practical techniques to support participants to manage nerves and improve their presentation style.

'As part of my responsibilities I am required to present the program to students and organisations that may be interested in engaging with our program. My role also requires me to facilitate training for students to help build their confidence and overall ability to perform in the workplace with the aim of ensuring long-term employment outcomes.

'The NIDA Corporate Training course provided me with various verbal and non-verbal skills that can be applied to all areas of my role, including presenting to large groups of students and companies and to small groups of colleagues, students and companies.'

In particular, Peta-Lee found that the part of the workshop focusing on verbal skills was really useful in helping her refine her communication style. 'The exercises made a definite impact on my verbal communication skills and provided me with long-term activities that will continue to improve my verbal presence.'
